The boat is built in a similar way to a regatta yacht, using high-end technology from prepreg carbon fibre layers as outer sandwich layers that encase a core of Nomex honeycomb. The construction of the French offshore specialists Finot/Conq is manufactured in a directly milled mould. The FC 53 not only borrows from racers in its construction. With a mast positioned far aft without a fixed backstay, fathead mainsail, fixed bowsprit and long J-measurement, the sail plan is reminiscent of modern offshore racers such as the 100-foot-long "Comanche" or those Imoca yachts with which professional single-handed sailors race non-stop around the world every four years on the occasion of the Vendée Globe.
The sail area downwind will be 170 square metres, and double that amount is planned for the space sheet. In addition to the fully lowered 3.75 metre deep swing keel, water ballast with a volume of one tonne per side ensures a great deal of stability. The interior with a moderate deckhouse consists of a spacious saloon with a full-size navigation and pantry area as well as three cabins of very different sizes. A dinghy can be stored in a garage at the stern. The owner is planning a small series. The first boat is due to be launched in spring 2016. Knierim Yacht Building specialises in one-offs and small series of upmarket construction. Internationally renowned yachts of recent times include the Ker 51 "Varuna" and the IRC 65 "Caro" designed by Botin Partners. The shipyard also built the first German America's Cupper on the Kiel Canal.
